Ah, the lovely Boylan Sisters!

For so long I've been trying to introduce Rames to my beloved movie musicals but he always avoided the topic all together. He hated when people broke into song in movies, he said. He hated when people "sang in a choir." Above all, he didn't want to be watching a film where random actors started dancing in bizarre situations. I gave it up for a bad job and refrained from bringing the subject up. It's okay to differ in opinion, I told myself. Not everyone has to like the same things... I hated it, but everyone says this is what makes life interesting.
But how can anyone not like Annie? It's a classic! Then, after some discussion, I realized Rames had never actually seen the movie. It was surreal to me. I was constantly singing "Tomorrow" while cooking dinner or I'd burst into "Hard-Knock-Life" while in the shower... he always seemed to know the songs but had actively refused to watch the movie. I always assumed he was familiar with the plot. How should I have known Annie never really reached Europe?
Tonight, on a whim, I downloaded Annie (1982) and simply insisted he sit down and watch it with me. I snuck into the office and pouted... "If I clean the entire Christmas dinner dishes ON MY OWN, will you watch Annie with me?" Because he had missed me while I was away at the Essers and felt like indulging me a bit, he agreed.
At the beginning of movie, I warned him whenever a song was approaching: "Okay, so it starts with a song but it's a nice one... there's another shortly after but it's nothing annoying." And, 20 minutes into the film, he admitted that it wasn't annoying after all! That it wasn't as bad as he'd thought! He found it heart-warming, Annie grew on him, he enjoyed Oliver Warbucks... he finally understood who Bernadette Peters is!
He liked it.
Then, he admitted that all this time he thought "Annie" was about a 20-something year old woman who finds love after having a hard life.
He had no idea that it was about children.
This, I believe, is the core of Rames's confusion/dislike of musicals -- he really and truly has some bizarre misconception of them. Just like the time I made him watch "Mulan" and he enjoyed it... afterward he told me he had been under the impression the movie was about a dragon.
I have discovered something phenomenal. Now, I just have to decide which musical movie to show him next.

Last week, I spent four days working at Interlift 2009, an elevator fair in Augsburg, Germany. On paper the job doesn't sound bad at all; 9 hours a day filled with menial tasks such as getting drinks and preparing Hawaii toast for potential clients is no big deal, right? I would like to truthfully say that I came away from my very first elevator fair with valuable marketing knowledge or memories of a great experience but I cannot. However, I now know why employees at fast food chains occasionally spit in your food.
Our week's sustenance:

To say I had a sugar buzz by the end of each day would be an understatement.
The weekend was low-key: Saturday I spent in a coma and Sunday was Rames's birthday which was spent lounging about and participating in our ongoing Phase 10 tournament. We went out to dinner at an Asian restaurant which has a fabulous buffet -- you can prepare your own dish by personally selecting your own meat, veggies and sauces to throw into the wok. They bring your meal directly to your table when it's done and mmm did I have a lot of mushrooms. Rames amused himself by having kangaroo, crocodile and ostrich and, while I had a taste, I just can't bring myself to believe these animals are for eating.

Disclaimer: I have read all 4 Twilight books. I fully and completely agree that they are crap, horribly written, and pander to the already-confused-emotions of girls who have just started their menstruation cycle. That being said, I enjoyed reading the first 3. The 4th one scarred me for life.
Judge me as you like.

Friday evening, Rames saw that there was a DVDrip of Twilight floating around Releaselog. I immediately grinned and suggested he should watch it with me.
Let me clarify: I never in a billion years thought he'd agree. I expected him to give me an at least 2-minute rant about how he would rather watch a 90-minute documentary on laser hair removal or sit through the Rent bonus features. It wasn't his sort of thing and it never would be. In fact, he has teased me about it for months, even going as far as to tape a picture of Edward Cullen on the mirror in the bedroom that says "Good morning, Pixel!"
But he agreed to watch it with me.
And he liked it a bit.
He liked the girl playing Bella. He laughed at many of the jokes. He was appropriately appalled yet slightly amused by Edward admitting he had been sneaking in Bella's room and watching her sleep. There were even a couple of scenes which, even though he'd never admit it, he found a tiny bit cute. Of course, he joked about it. "Oh, Edward, you sucked all the vampire venom out of me. That is so romantic."
When Edward kissed her forehead at the end of the hospital scene, it even elicited an "Aww."
He gave the movie 5.25 Jesuses out of 10.
I'm just saying.
